# Choosing pharmacogenomics reporting software

What clinical labs should look for in software that turns pharmacogenomic genotypes into reports prescribers trust and act on.

## What does pharmacogenomics reporting software do?

PGx reporting software translates genotyping results into star alleles and metabolizer phenotypes, matches them to guideline-based drug recommendations, and produces a report that tells prescribers which medications and doses fit the patient’s genetics.

## What is CPIC?

CPIC, the Clinical Pharmacogenetics Implementation Consortium, publishes peer-reviewed guidelines that translate pharmacogenomic phenotypes into prescribing recommendations, and most PGx reports base their medication guidance on them.

## What is a metabolizer phenotype?

A metabolizer phenotype describes how active a drug-metabolizing enzyme is likely to be, based on the patient’s alleles, for example poor, intermediate, normal, rapid, or ultrarapid metabolizer.
