# What is LIS middleware?

A plain-language guide to the software layer between your instruments and your laboratory information system, and how to decide whether your lab needs it.

## What is LIS middleware?

LIS middleware is software that sits between laboratory instruments and the laboratory information system. It translates each instrument’s protocol, routes orders to the right analyzer, and returns results to the LIS so data moves without manual entry.

## Does every lab need middleware?

No. Labs with a few modern analyzers that their LIS already supports can use direct interfaces. Middleware is most valuable for labs with many instruments, serial-only analyzers, multiple sites, or plans to change LIS.

## Can LIS middleware run in the cloud?

Yes. Cloud middleware runs in a hosted environment, and a small local agent at the lab connects to instruments and securely carries their traffic to the cloud, removing the need for an on-site middleware server.
